Archangels and the Modern Scientific Worldview
Lately I was thinking about if Archangels can be connected to our modern scientific worldview:
And I think, yes they can be particularly connected to quantum physics, neuroscience, psychology, and cosmology.
The crucial question, however, is whether we understand archangels as actual spiritual beings, as symbols of universal principles, or as experiences of human consciousness.
Science has so far found no verifiable evidence for the existence of archangels as independent beings.
Nevertheless, there are intriguing points of connection between spiritual traditions and scientific discoveries.
1. Archangels as Expressions of Universal Principles
In the Qabalah, archangels are associated with specific Sephiroth on the Tree of Life. These can be symbolically compared to natural processes.
Archangel | Spiritual Principle | Scientific Parallel |
Metatron | Unity, divine order | Mathematics, symmetry, and natural laws |
Raziel | Wisdom, hidden knowledge | Information science and epistemology |
Tzaphkiel | Understanding, structure | Systems theory and complexity |
Zadkiel | Mercy, expansion | Cooperation and social neuroscience |
Chamael | Strength, boundaries | Stress responses and self-regulation |
Raphael | Healing, harmony | Medicine and homeostasis |
Haniel | Love, beauty, emotion | Emotion research and attachment |
Michael | Protection, clarity | Resilience and psychological boundaries |
Gabriel | Communication, mediation | Information processing and language |
Sandalphon | Embodiment, matter | Biology and physical processes |
These associations are symbolic analogies, not scientifically established identities. The assignments of angels also vary depending on the Qabalistic tradition.
2. Metatron and the Mathematical Structure of the Universe
In mystical traditions, Metatron is associated with divine order. Metatron's Cube is particularly interesting in this context.
Modern science demonstrates that many natural phenomena
follow mathematical structures:
- Crystals form regular geometric lattices.
- Molecules possess characteristic spatial symmetries.
- Physical laws can be described through mathematical equations.
- Symmetries play a fundamental role in particle physics.
- From a spiritual perspective, Metatron could therefore be regarded as a personification of the mathematical order of nature.
Metatron's Cube itself, however, is not a scientifically recognized fundamental model of the universe.
3. Archangels and Quantum Physics
This is where the subject becomes particularly fascinating, but also where it is essential to make clear distinctions.
Quantum physics reveals that the world operates differently at the smallest scales than we are accustomed to in everyday life. Particles can become quantum mechanically entangled, and physical systems are described through probability amplitudes.
Spiritual traditions also speak of a deeper reality that is not directly visible.
The common ground lies in the question: Is the world we directly perceive the entirety of reality?
However, quantum physics does not imply that angels exist, nor does it demonstrate that thoughts directly create external reality. Likewise, the quantum-physical concept of observation does not provide evidence for a universal consciousness.
The connection is therefore philosophically interesting, but it does not constitute physical proof.
4. Archangels and Neuroscience
One particularly concrete point of connection is human consciousness.
For thousands of years, people have reported encounters with beings of light, angels, or a higher presence.
Neuroscience investigates such experiences, for example, in connection with:
- Meditation and prayer
- Changes in self-perception
- Intense emotional experiences
- The perception of presence and transcendence
Such experiences can feel extraordinarily real and can profoundly transform people's lives.
From a scientific perspective, it is possible to investigate which brain processes are involved. Whether an actual spiritual being is also involved remains an open metaphysical question.
5. Ezekiel's Vision and Modern Science
The vision of the prophet Ezekiel describes beings with multiple faces, interlocking wheels, and an extraordinary heavenly manifestation.
It can be understood on several levels:
Religious: As a revelation of the divine presence.
Psychological: As a visionary experience expressed through symbols and imagery.
Systems-theoretical: As a representation of a complex system in which different forces are interconnected.
None of these perspectives proves that Ezekiel witnessed a physical machine, another dimension, or an actually observable supernatural being.
6. A Unified Model: Three Levels of Reality
A philosophical model, not a scientifically established structure.
In this model, science and spirituality describe different aspects of human reality.
Physics asks: How does nature function?
Neuroscience asks: How do our experiences arise?
Spirituality asks: What meaning do these experiences hold for
our lives?
These perspectives do not necessarily have to contradict one another, provided that their respective boundaries are respected.
My Central Conclusion
Perhaps the most fruitful approach is not to hastily define archangels as physical beings or forces of nature, but rather to understand them as spiritual representations of order, knowledge, healing, protection, and transformation.
In this way, they can also hold meaning for scientifically minded individuals without requiring scientific findings to be stretched beyond their actual implications.
In the context of your interest in the Qabalistic Tree of Life, I find one further question particularly fascinating:
Could the ten Sephiroth, including Da'at, be understood as a symbolic model for the emergence of consciousness, information, and material reality—and what roles would Metatron, Michael, Gabriel, and the other archangels play within such a model?
This could lead to the development of a highly intriguing comprehensive model that compares Qabalah, consciousness research, and modern physics without equating spirituality
with science.
